A Statement to the Community  from Citizens Health Care Advocates
We have carefully and thoroughly examined the latest research and conclude that secondhand smoke is a serious public health problem in Owensboro-Daviess County.

 We cannot dismiss the fact that waitresses and bartenders have the highest rate of lung cancer of any occupation….We cannot dismiss the fact that instances of asthma and bronchitis increase dramatically when exposed to secondhand smoke…  We cannot dismiss the fact that in the state of Kentucky, an average of 3000 non-smokers die each year from lung cancer caused by second hand smoke…We cannot dismiss the fact that second hand smoke contains 200 poisons and 40 cancer cause carcinogens…We cannot dismiss the fact that second hand smoke is classified as a “Group A” carcinogen – A substance known to cause cancer in humans for which there is no safe level of exposure.

 
Consequently, we salute all those who are taking steps to reduce exposure to secondhand smoke whenever and wherever possible in our community. A comprehensive ordinance prohibiting smoking in all public buildings and workplaces would be the single most important event relative to health in this community in the past decade.

New Surgeon General’s Report Focuses on the Effects of Secondhand Smoke

U.S. Surgeon General Richard H. Carmona issued a comprehensive scientific report which concludes that there is no risk-free level of exposure to secondhand smoke. Nonsmokers exposed to secondhand smoke at home or work increase their risk of developing heart disease by 25 to 30 percent and lung cancer by 20 to 30 percent. The finding is of major public health concern due to the fact that nearly half of all nonsmoking Americans are still regularly exposed to secondhand smoke.
