Stephen M. Kulka Memorial Award
The Stephen M. Kulka Memorial Award was established September 2004, by Citizens Health Care Advocates (CHCA) to recognize outstanding efforts by non-health care professionals to improve health and access to health care for the poor, uninsured, and underinsured of the Owensboro-Daviess County community.
The award is a complement to the R. C. Neblett Memorial Award which recognizes exceptional and compassionate care by health care professionals.
Steve Kulka, who passed away on May 15, 2004, was a founding member of CHCA and a charter member of its board of directors. He chaired a committee that focused on the needs of those who fall through the cracks of the health care delivery system: the poor, uninsured, and underinsured of our community.
Steve was a favorite CHCA and community leader: hard-working, good-natured, and unassuming. His tireless efforts to help others, whether cooking bar-b-q for charity fund-raisers, organizing a community motor sports festival, or building a wheelchair ramp for a needy person, were an inspiration to all who had the privilege to know and work with him.
